Job Description

The Electrical / Electronic Technician reports to the Chief Engineer or his/her designee. Employee is responsible for the maintenance, testing, and repair of the ship's electrical and electronic equipment. Employee will complete assigned duties and tasks as scheduled through consultation with the vessel's 1st Assistant Engineer, and/or 2nd Assistant Engineer. Electrical systems include but are not limited to, shore electrical connection(s), power generation and distribution, lighting, electrically powered deck equipment, engine-room monitoring, engine/bridge controls, alarm systems, navigational equipment, and communications equipment. Sailing experience on board commercial/military vessels, and familiarity with high-voltage electrical systems is required.

 


  • Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments and sea terms

  • Work closely with the Ship’s engineering officers and logistics coordinator with regard to parts and supplies needed for the maintenance and repair of assigned

  • Responsible for identifying and completing needed maintenance/repairs on applicable

  • Responsible for testing completed repairs and communicating work performed to the First Engineer for entry into NSE maintenance tracking

  • Active participant in annual Periodic Safety Test Procedure (PSTP) as it applies to related

  • Frequently supervise and train students of varying experience

  • Act as a safety observer during any evolution involving groups of students and completing permits to work, risk analysis, or other documentation required by Safety Management

  • Responsible for objectively evaluating student performance in cooperation with the ship’s engineering officers.

  • As a uniformed crew, will comply with the regimental uniform regulations as modified by the Master of the Training

SKILLS



  • Thorough knowledge and familiarity with high (6600 VAC), medium and low voltage electrical/electronic and associated

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a shipboard, industrial, or military

  • Willingness to teach and objectively evaluate

  • Ability to work with people in a closed, intense environment while providing effective

  • Professional presentation, appearance, and work

  • Ability to work irregular/extended hours/weeks, including night and weekend duties as

  • Sufficient computer skills to operate shipboard and other automated

  • Ability to work in a student-oriented training

  • Ability to teach proper electrical protocols within the scope of the Safety Management

 

REQUIREMENTS



  • Merchant Mariner Credential with Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) Electrician endorsement and/or ETO

  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate (STCW expiry date)

  • Valid US Passport

  • Maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

  • Computer proficiency is required: knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office Suite

  • The physical requirements as outlined in the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Medical Manual, COMDTINST M16721.48 (series) are herein

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move

  • Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, , using feet and legs and/or hands and reaching overhead with arms and hands.

  • Frequently requires lifting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and

  • Requires use of hands to manipulate objects, tools, or

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS



  • Must participate in USCG drug testing

  • Participate in annual underway periods consisting of 2–3-month training cruises requiring time away from the

  • Actively participate in MARAD deployments, shipyard periods or other operations where the ship may be utilized away from

  • Perform watch and maintenance work in areas that may include but are not limited to such hazards as hot and cold weather, rain, salt spray, dirt, fumes, rough seas, moving mechanical equipment, loud noises, vibration, and working at
